Working with IDL Graphics Training Course
Working with IDL Graphics is a two-day course for those who want a comprehensive overview and introduction to the different graphics systems available in IDL.
Each course participant receives a PDF copy of my IDL graphics book, Coyote's Guide to Traditional IDL Graphics which explains the traditional graphics system in detail, and also explains how that system can be modified with Coyote Graphics to create a modern graphics system that retains the speed and simplicity of the traditional graphics system, while also offering the convenience and features of the most modern graphics system.
Working with IDL Graphics Overview
- The Traditional IDL Graphics System (any version of IDL)
- What are direct or raster graphics?
- Introduction to basic IDL graphics commands (Plot, Contour, Surface, and TV)
- Modifying the output of these commands with keywords, etc.
- Working with color with these graphics commands (indexed vs. decomposed)
- Limitations and advantages of these graphics commands
- Creating PostScript, PDF, and raster file output (PNG, JPEG, etc.) with these commands
- The Function Graphics System (IDL 8.x)
- What to we mean by function graphics commands?
- Introduction to basic function graphics commands (Plot, Contour, Surface, and Image)

Skills Required:
- Basic operating knowledge of computers required.
